Beauty Quick Tip: How to Prevent Your Eye Liner From Smearing

Eye liner Don't you just hate it when you take the time to expertly apply your eye liner only for it to smear a few hours later?  Want a really easy way to keep your eye liner in place?  I thought so.  Please read on…

First, apply your eye liner to the top lash line by working into base of the lashes.  Next, take a smudger brush (I prefer a synthetic flat type of brush for this as opposed to a rounded bristle brush) and smudge out the eye liner into the base of the lashes.

Next, using the same brush, choose the same color of eye shadow as your liner and apply the shadow directly over the eye liner.  The powdery consistency of the shadow will help absorb any oils/waxes from the liner and make it stay put for hours and hours.

If you'd like to go for a unique look, use a different color of shadow over the eye liner.  For example, if you use a black or smoke colored liner, use an emerald green or sapphire blue shadow over top.  The effect is really pretty and allows you to get creative with different eye looks without spending a ton of time doing so.  By the way, you can follow these same steps on your lower lash line too!  Give it a try today and see what you come up with!

Beauty Quick Tip: A New Use For Lip Balms You Didn’t Love

I'll admit it- I am a lip balm/lip gloss addict.  I have no shame in saying so.  However, as a lippie-productFingers with gloss junkie, I've come across a few (even made a few) balms/glosses that just didn't live up to my personal standard.

In the past, I'd simply discard the product by trying to make a two-pointer in the trash can.  Not anymore!  I'm saving these babies and using them as cuticle moisturizers.  Why spend more moola on a separate cuticle product for my nails when I can use the lip balm I was about to dump???  Since they were meant to keep your lips soft and kissable, go ahead and use them to keep your cuticles smooth and moisturized.  I now keep some spare balms stashed in my purse to apply on the go and on my nightstand to apply before bed.  Quick, easy and convenient.

So, check your makeup bags ladies.  If you've got any uncolored lip balms/glosses that you were going to toss for whatever reason, save them for a treat for your cuticles!  Your nail beds will thank you. 😉

Beauty Quick Tip: What To Do When You’ve Applied Too Much Blush

Blush Mistake

We've all done it.  Gotten a little too over-zealous with the blush.  Before you know it, our cheek color application is making us look like we've gotten a slap across the face.  Ouch!

What's the best way to deal with this makeup mistake?

It's easy!  Instead of trying to rub away excess product and pigment which will only make your skin 'pink up' even more, simply apply a light application of face powder over the problem area and gently buff over the blush mistake.  This will greatly tone down and diffuse the look of too much cheek color.

To avoid making this mistake again in the future, be sure to tap off any excess cheek color before applying it to the face.  Remember that the first place your blush brush will touch will deposit the most amount of pigment.  So, instead of plunking the brush right onto the apples of your cheeks, start at your hairline and gently move the brush forward.  Continue with a light 'sweeping' motion back and forth horizontally.  To blend away any obvious blush lines, move the brush over the blush line in an up and down motion.  This softens the look, making it appear more natural- the way blush is really meant to be.

Beauty Quick Tip: How To Prevent Your Mascara From Drying Out

Mascara should be changed out every 3 months.  However, sometimes before that time limit is up, your mascara may start to dry out a little.  Here's a simple, yet effective tip for preventing this…

Simply add 1 to 2 drops of sterile saline solution to tube.  Next, dip the wand into the tube and swirl it Mascara wand around.  Your mascara tube and wand have now been 'remoistened' with the antibacterial saline solution!  This will give you a few more weeks of use before needing to buy more mascara.

Remember, never pump the wand in an 'up and down' motion as this forces excess air into the tube and will dry out the product twice as fast.

Beauty Quick Tip: Mascara Mishap Fast Fix

I can't take credit for the following tip I'm about to share with you.  However, when I come across something great; it's just too good to keep it to myself!  Plus, I've tested this trick out and it really does work.

Have you ever gotten mascara on your skin during application?  I have and it's not pretty.  Normally, I'd take a cotton swab and dip it in some makeup remover and swipe the swab onto the mascara mishap.  It works great, but can also erase the makeup underneath the mascara mistake, such as foundation and/or concealer.

The other day I read about a really cool trick on Elke Von Freudenberg's blog, a celeb makeup artist, in order to solve this problem.  She recommends that you wait until the mascara mistake dries completely and then use a longer bristled eye shadow brush to sweep away the mistake!  How cool is that?!?

Well, I got to test this trick personally the other day.  While applying my mascara, I sneezed!  Ugh…there were little black mascara dots underneath my entire lower lash line.  But, instead of busting out the q-tips and makeup remover, I waited for the little dots to dry and then used my tapered crease brush to gently sweep them away.  No muss, no fuss!  The brush whisked away the mascara mistake and my undereye concealer stayed intact.  Gotta love it!

Thanks Elke for sharing such a cool trick!

Beauty Quick Tip: Keep Those Unruly Brows In Place!

Has this ever happened to you?

At some point throughout the day, you do a quick look-over in a mirror and notice your eyebrows are totally out of place?  I mean sometimes those little hairs are standing straight up!  How embarrassing, right?

I could recommend a fancy brow gel to keep those unruly hairs in place, but I'm not going to do that.  Why spend the money if you don't have to?

Here's what I do:

~First, comb your brows into place using either a baby toothbrush or a brow spoolie (this tool looks like a long-handled mascara wand- I prefer to use a spoolie vs. a toothbrush).

~Next, spritz a teeny, tiny amount of hair spray onto the spoolie (or toothbrush) and gently comb through your brows again.

Voila!  Now your brows can stay in place all day without having to purchase a separate brow product.

Quick Tip: Yes Virginia, You CAN Wear That Dark Lipstick!

I want you to go and grab your makeup bag right now. Go on. Do it.  Seriously, step away from the Dark Lipstick computer for a moment and grab that bag!

Ok, you have it?  Great.  Open it up and look to see how many lip colors you're NOT wearing!

In the past (before I started making my OWN lip products), I would have bags full of lip colors that I wasn't wearing.  Why did I have so many?  Well, in the store the color looked fab but when I got it home, it was totally different.  It was way too dark and it just looked W-R-O-N-G.  This kind of scenario used to happen to me all the time before I understood the importance of cosmetics & lighting principles, etc. but that's another post. Onto you…

Lipstick 911

If you find yourself with one too many lipsticks that you're not wearing because they look too dark on you, I'm here to let you know that you actually CAN get some milage out of them!

First, put on your favorite clear lip balm.  Next, take that lipstick and put 3 dabs of color on your top and bottom lips.  Use a lip brush to move and blend the color across your lips.  You'll notice that instead of a really dark color, you've created more of a sheer lip tint.  You could even dab on a few different colors to create something new.  Since it's the holiday season now, add a little glam by swiping on a gold or silver shimmer lip gloss and voila!  Instant sexy lips without looking like Vampira!

What About You?

How many lipsticks do you have that you're not wearing?  My total count at one time was 25!  Was this beauty quick tip helpful for you?  Leave a comment below to let me know.  Thanks!

Quick Tip: How To Prevent Raccoon Eyes!

Don't you hate it when you just get done doing your makeup and you notice a few specks of eye shadow (especially loose shadows & glitter) or mascara has fallen right underneath your eyes?

What do you wind up doing?

You usually wind up taking a tissue or your finger and try to delicately wipe away the fallout.  But alas, despite all of your gingerly dabs the little specks have smeared into an almighty mess and now you've got raccoon eyes.  Not to mention that you've just wiped away almost all of the undereye concealer you applied earlier.

What's a girl to do?

For years, makeup pros have used a little trick to prevent this from happening.  We take some loose powder and apply it generously in a 'half-moon' shape directly underneath the eye area.  The loose powder will 'catch' any shadow or mascara fallout.  Then, we simply take a fluffy powder brush and gently dust the powder away.  Sounds great right?  Well…

Sometimes the loose powder applied underneath eye area can be a little messy if you don't have a steady hand.  The powder itself can become the fallout problem especially if it's landing all over your black power suit!  Another caveat is that it can actually highlight the undereye area too much.  Excess powder tends to stick where it shouldn't and it's hard to remove without smearing concealer or foundation previously applied.

Shadowshields Recently I was tipped off to a neat new beauty product that can alleviate all of the problems mentioned above.  It's called SHADOW SHIELDS.  These nifty little half-moon shaped pads are applied to the undereye area to catch any fallout just like the powder trick above except there's no chance of more mess and they pop off easily without disturbing any other makeup.  Click here for a tutorial.

You'll defintely want to get your hands on Shadow Shields if you plan on doing any sexy smokey eye looks this fall.  A pack of 50 shields will run you $16.95.  Don't like the price?  Well, you can always use my powder trick mentioned above.  Just make sure you drape your clothes with some sort of protection.

Stay tuned for a future blog post on how to do the best smokey eye look ever!

PS- If you're an esthetician like me who offers lash tinting services in your salon or spa, SHADOW SHIELDS are a must and much easier than having to use traditional, non-adhesive eye shields.

Have YOU tried Shadow Shields yet? What's YOUR opinion on this product?

I want to hear from YOU.

Cheers!
