A Unique Way to Say “Thank You!”

A few weeks ago my daughter turned 10 and wanted something special for her party favors.  Her party was themed around makeup, so I thought it would easy to come up with favor ideas since I formulate cosmetics.  Should I make eye shadow favors? Nah.  Blush? Nah.  Lip balm?  YESSSSS!  The only problem was…I DON'T MAKE LIP BALM.  However, I knew of someone who did.  Enter Emily Caswell of GCDSpa.com to the rescue!

Laurens favors Emily has an amazing niche business where she makes personalized 'thank yous' for your guests.  Just take a look at the favors she did my for my daughter's party.  They were ADORABLE!  Everyone at the party was so impressed as was I.  So much so, that I wanted to tell YOU, my readers, about Emily and her amazing small business.  Read on…

"When people ask me what I do, I usually say something like, "I make lip balm!" or "I make party favors!" Which are both true, but what I SHOULD tell them is that I help people to say thank you so they can make others feel special. This wasn't always my job description.

In 1996 I left a biotech lab job to start my own business. I have a background in biology and enjoyed working in the lab, but I wanted to be able to work from home once I had kids. I had always done design work on my own and so I started working with local businesses on their print designs and websites. For about 8 years I created lots of print ads and brochures, business cards, product labels, and other packaging, as well as helping businesses to find customers online. In the fall of 2004 I got together with a friend to make some spa products for holiday gifts. I created labels and packaging for our sugar scrubs and bath salts the same way I'd made them for my clients'

products. When we gave away our gifts and ended up with orders, I realized I might be able to combine my lab experience with my design work (and still be able to work from home). Within a year I started GCDSpa.com and was making gifts from my home "lab."

Sweetpeasalts Some of my first design clients had been in the wedding industry, so I'd spent a lot of time designing for weddings. I knew how special brides felt when they had gifts personalized just for them, so I started by offering custom wedding and bridal shower favors. Pretty soon I added birthday party and baby shower designs. Now I design for girls nights out, bachelorette parties, anniversaries, and divorce parties, too. (Everyone should feel special!) Over time I've added more product options, flavors, designs, and colors.

There are lots of businesses making custom party favors and gifts, so I've worked hard to offer something more. I have very low minimums for personalized work, and have a wide selection of flavors, fragrances, and designs. (I even make totally new designs and flavors for unique party themes.) I send emails with samples of artwork so my customers can approve them before I put together their favors. I also wrap and decorate each favor so they arrive fully assembled for customers who are pressed for time. And when time is really of the essence, I offer rush order service, too!

I love everything about my work, but one of the best parts is coming up with fun theme ideas. Of course thisEmily GCDspa  time of year there is lots of inspiration from the colors of Fall, as well as the flavors and scents that remind us of the season. Apples have become such popular favors, particularly decorated candy and caramel apples, and I love making my own version of these favorites. It may be corny, but I think the "Apple-y Ever After" theme is adorable for bridal showers. My customers also have come up with some terrific themes. For example, last year I designed favors for an apple-themed baby shower, with tags that read: "The Apple Has A Stem On It!" (Clearly a baby boy shower!) Autumn holidays also provide their own inspiration. I've enjoyed making favors for Halloween parties, particularly for "Ghouls Night Out," and I even make Spooky Juice lip balm just for those events. And since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I also create a lot of favors to offer "Hope for Hooters," featuring pink owls and Pink Lady lip balm to benefit breast cancer research.

Though I offer lots of products, my focus is making tiny thank-yous in personalized packages. I love that expressing something as simple as gratitude can help people feel appreciated and special. It's a part of my job that never gets old!"

So, if you're ever in need of a unique and special way of expressing your gratitude, give Emily a call or check out her site at www.GCDSpa.com .  I'm sure you'll be thrilled with her work!  I know I was and so were a gaggle of little 10yr old tweenie boppers.

Do YOU Have a Favorite Beauty Tool? I Do Now…

Happy New Year everyone!  I hope 2010 is starting off wonderfully for you.

Today, I'm asking you a question: What's YOUR Favorite Beauty Tool?

Is there something in your arsenal of beauty products/equipment that is an absolute must-have?

For Christmas, Santa gave me an In-Styler.  You may have seen the informercials for this product.  It's a hair straightening/hair curling rotating iron gizmo that claims to give your hair a shiny, glossy appearance without damage while it straightens or curls.

I have naturally curly hair and it takes FOREVER to blow it out straight.  When I do style it this way, it can still look a little frizzy- even with all the smoothing products I use in it beforehand.

Enter the In-styler…

In Styler

WOW! This piece of beauty equipment is AWESOME!  It really does straighten my hair without any frizziness and it's quick.  I haven't noticed any damage either as a result of using it.  It takes a little bit of a learning curve to use it- I found it a somewhat cumbersome at first.  But, once you get the hang of it, it's a breeze.  It's now a definite MUST HAVE for me.

One piece of advice before using the In-Styler… don't put any styling aids in your hair BEFORE using it.  That means NO mousse, gel, hair spray, pommade, etc.  The In-Styler seems to drag along the hair if you use these kinds of things beforehand and you don't get a smooth finish.  That's just my experience…

So, if the In-Styler was on your Christmas list but Santa didn't deliver, go out and buy it for yourself.  It's definitely worth it!

How To Stop Wasting Your Loose Mineral Makeup!

Spilled makeuo I've heard this before, "Mineral makeup is messy."

And this one too, "My mineral makeup spills out everywhere and I'm wasting a lot of product."

No worries ladies.  I've got a simple solution for you to keep your loose minerals from making a mess and being wasted!

When you open your jar of loose mineral makeup, you'll notice there is a plastic sifter with holes inserted into the jar and some sort of seal overing these holes. Most people make the mistake of pulling off this clear sifter seal entirely in order to dispense the minerals.  This is the problem!  Without this clear seal attached, all of the sifter's holes are exposed and the minerals can easily escape.

The trick to dispensing only a small amount at a time is to leave the sifter seal in place!

Huh?  What? How Am I Supposed To Get The Minerals Out?

Yes- leave the sifter seal attached to the sifter and instead, take a clean straight pin and poke a few holes through the sifter seal right through the sifter's holes.  Twist the straight pin around until you've created an opening.  Don't poke openings through all of the sifter's holes- only do a few.

Voila!  Now you have a simple & easy way to prevent product wastage and excess, messy spills.  Your jars are now more user AND travel friendly. 😉

My Favorite Mascara…L’oreal Double Extend

I'm no stranger to mascara with "tube technology".  For those of you who are, I'll explain the terminology in a moment.

For years, I used BLINC's Kiss Me mascara and even it sold it in my private skin practice.  I loved this mascara; just not the price tag that went along with it.  Not to mention the fact that you needed to buy a separate primer to use before applying the mascara.  But, I spent the money (and so did my clients) because of the way this product made my (our) lashes look and how it performed; not to mention the "uniqueness" factor of this product.

For those readers who have no idea what I'm talking about when I say "tube technology", let me explain.  Normal mascaras simply paint or coat the lashes with product.  "Tube technology" mascaras actually form tiny little tubes around each lash, plumping them up and lengthening them.  To remove this type of mascara, all you need is a little pressure and warm water applied to the lashes. Instantly, the tubes begin to slide off.  Gone are the days of using greasy eye makeup removal products that can sting and irritate.

When I first started using this type of mascara, I admit I was little freaked out when I took it off.  The little tubes that were sliding off during the removal looked like my lashes were falling out!  But no- my lashes were fine and completely intact.  It was just a little paranoia on my part.

Like I said, I had been using Blinc's Kiss Me Mascara for a while until …

Loreal Dbl Extend I saw a commercial on TV for L'oreal's version of "tube technology" mascara called Double Extend.  The next day I was at my local Walmart grabbing up a tube.  The price was right too- $8.95 compared to the $39 (plus shipping) I was spending on my current brand.

I used the Double Extend the next day and was excited to realize that I got the same plumping and lengthening effects to my lashes, not to mention that the primer and mascara were all in one tube!  The lash primer is at one end of the tube and the actual mascara is at the other.

At the end of the day, I proceeded to remove the Double Extend just as I would with my former brand.  It came off in the same manner, although it took slightly more pressure and warm water to remove it than the Kiss Me mascara.  That was OK with me though because it was worth the $30 savings!  I decided to stop carrying and using my former brand and I also told my clients about the new product I discovered.

My reasons for falling in love with "tube technology" mascaras are simple: they don't budge, smudge, smear, flake or cake.  Plus, they don't wind up all over your pillow when you're too lazy or tired to take your makeup off at the end of the day.  I've also noticed since using L'oreal's Double Extend that I no longer have to curl my lashes.  The primer actually sets a curl in my lashes for me before applying the mascara.  That's a big time saver and so it's 'thumbs up' in my book.

I highly recommend this mascara.  But, a word of caution… In my opinion, you're either going to love this type of mascara or you're going to hate it.  There really are no in-betweens here folks.  However, spending just $8.95 to discover a possibly new favorite product for your cosmetic collection is defintely worth it.

One more thing before I go, remember to change out your mascara every 3 months- no excuses!  L'oreal's Double Extend Mascara can be purchased online and at most major drugstore retailers such as Walmart, CVS, Walgreen's, etc.

Question:  Have you ever used "tube technology" mascara before?  If so, what was your opinion of it?  Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

The Top 5 Reasons Why YOU Should Visit A Skin Care Professional

Everyday your skin is bombarded with dirt, debris, stress, bacteria, UV rays and environmental pollution which cause pre-mature aging, inflammation and overall poor skin health and appearance.

Healthy, unbroken skin is the first defense against disease.  Professional care for the face- one of the areas most exposed to the environment- is a critical step to good health.  Professional treatments of this area by a licensed esthetician provides a barrier to illness, a purposeful immunity, and a radiant, glowing YOU.

Facialmassage Need more reasons WHY you should consider receiving professional skin care treatments?  Here are the TOP 5

1. Skin is analyzed by a trained and licensed professional.  Studies show that 60% of people define their skin type and home care products incorrectly.  A licensed esthetician is trained in skin analysis to provide accurate information, create an appropriate treatment plan and make proper home care product recommendations to enable you to meet your skin care goals.

2. Deep cleansing of the skin by a professional rids the skin of dirt, debris and environmental pollutants in order to allow your skin to maintain a healthy balance and enhance its ability to fight off disease and aging.  It also enables the skin to better utilize the products applied for nourishment, exfoliation and protection.

3. Deeper exfoliation and penetration of products with professional equipment, techniques and products work to allow beneficial ingredients to penetrate deeper into the skin for faster and greater results.

4. Professional facial massage dilates the vascular system, encouraging it to bring vital nutrients and moisture to the deeper layers of the skin and to remove waste and toxins produced during normal cell metabolism.  This stimulation also brings a "healthy glow" to the skin that only a professional facial massage can produce.

And lastly…

5. Professional extractions are performed when needed.  Acne and breakouts can be spread, and scarring caused, by picking.  An esthetician is trained to perform extractions when needed and in the least invasive and most safe and effective manner.  The skin is properly prepped and extractions are done with optimal results and minimal discomfort.

Professional facial treatments can be relaxing and rejuvenating, a much needed prescription for our hectic daily and stress-filled lives, especially since stress plays a major role in many skin care and other physical disorders.

Worried you can't afford having professional skin care treatments?  Don't be.  Most professional skin carePumpkinfacial treatments start in the range of $55 to $75 for a basic facial and are recommended every 6 to 8 weeks.  For about a $1 to $2 per day, a professional skin care treatment is easily within your grasp.  If you go out to eat more than once per week, cut back to one night per week.  Opt for the small latte at the coffee shop instead of the large.  Basically, where there's a will…there's a way.  Do this for yourself- your mind, body AND your skin will thank you.

Question:  Have ever received a professional skin care treatment?  If so, what service did you have performed and what was your experience like?  Please leave your comment below.  Thank you!

Stay Younger Looking by Staying AWAY from Indoor Tanning Beds

Tanning Bed It was once thought that getting a tan from an indoor tanning bed unit was a safer alternative to outdoor sun exposure.  There's even tanning salons that are still trying to market indoor tanning beds as such.  Don't believe their false marketing hype.  Numerous studies have been done over the years exposing the fact that tanning beds are just as harmful, if not more so, than exposing your skin to the sun.

Why you ask?  Most indoor tanning beds emit 95% or more of UVA rays as opposed to UVB rays.  UVA rays, also known as 'aging' rays, penetrate deep into the dermal layer (deepest layer) of your skin causing mucho damage at the cellular level.  The remaining 5% of rays are UVB, known as the 'burning' rays, which are associated with a typical sunburn that affects the uppermost layer of skin (epidermis).  Since there is less burning associated with indoor tanning beds, it gives you a false sense of security that your skin isn't being damaged.

Oh, and if skin damage wasn't enough…what about the 'ick' factor?  By this I mean that you're laying on a bed where someone else was just most likely sweating and shedding dead skin cells.  You and I both know that those beds ARE NOT disinfected properly between clients.  They're simply sprayed off lightly with a cleaner and that's it.  Eeeewww!  Can you say TOPICAL SKIN INFECTION????

According to Elizabeth Whitmore, M.D., associate professor of dermatology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, indoor tanning light can- and does- lead to skin cancer and should be avoided.

Since I'm very pale, I do like to sport a faux tan in the warmer months.  One of my favorite products toTan Towel use for this is called Tan Towel.  It's an awesome product that's quick, easy, convenient and gives me a beautiful sun-kissed tan without being streaky or looking orange.  You simply wipe the towelette anywhere on your body that you want a faux tan.  No messy creams or gels to deal with!  The application dries in 60 seconds and full color is developed in about 3 hours.  I do this at night, after a shower.  When I wake up, Voila! I'm tan!  It doesn't stain clothing or bed sheets either and the color lasts about 3 to 4 days.  I LOVE this stuff!

To add a little more 'oomph' to my look, I simply dust on a pinch of Vacation In A Jar and I'm all set.  I look like I've had a restful tropical vacation and I never even left the backyard!  Of course, I still apply a daily SPF30 no matter what, as neither the Tan Towel or Vacation In A Jar will protect my Tn__MG_0912 VACATION skin from sun exposure & damage when I'm outside.

Getting Zits Means Zapped Energy???

Did you know that getting zits can actually zap your energy?

Woman looking in mirror A recent Ohio State University study revealed that women who experience breakouts are at risk for exhaustion.  Why?  Having blemishes rear their ugly heads leads to self-consciousness and worry.  These strong emotions drain your energy.  It's a nasty vicious cycle- more worry equals more stress, which can lead to more breakouts.

The quick fix?  Find a great, non-comedogenic concealer to cover up the problem spots!  Even though the 'problem' may still be there, when you (or anyone else for that matter) can't actually see it, you tend to worry about it MUCH LESS.

Need a great concealer to do the trick?  Consider purchasing PRIIA Cosmetics Creamy Mineral Face Concealer.  It's non-comedogenic, non-acnegenic, skin-soothing and has been formulated to cover up skin imperfections like a dream!  It's got a 'drier' texture so adheres to the skin and stays put until you're ready to take it off.  PRIIA's Creamy Mineral Concealer is available in 4 skin tone-friendly colors and is VEGAN and GLUTEN-FREE.Tn__MG_1180 Face Concealer Group

After you take off your concealer for the day, you'll need a product to put those pimples in their place.  PRIIA Cosmetics has what you need: Blemish Spot Treatment Stick with Manuka & White Willow Bark.  This is a paraben-free, water-based acne treatment with natural antibacterial extracts to calm and heal blemish prone skin.  It's available in a convenient rollerball applicator so you can spot treat anytime, anywhere!

At PRIIA Cosmetics, we've got you covered…literally!
